IMSGuardian
The IMSGuardian Engine 
Pre-Failure Detection System was developed specifically for the M96/M97 Porsche engines found in all Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras from 1997 through 2008 (inclusive). 

The technology was borrowed from helicopters which use several sensors (chip detectors) similar to the IMSGuardian to detect small ferrous metal “chips” in the engine’s oil.

Ferrous metal in the oil is a sign that excessive internal engine wear is happening, generally in a bearing such as the intermediate shaft bearing which has been known to cause catastrophic engine failure in a small percentage of the above-listed Porsche engines.

Once installed, the IMSGuardian is practically undetectable, as it uses an OEM Porsche lighted switch which fits perfectly in your car’s dash, in place of a blank.

The “switch” has an AMBER colored light indicating that the system is operational. If the sensors detect enough ferrous metal in the oil the light turns RED and an audible beep is activated to alert you.

Installation can be a DIY if you have basic mechanical and electrical expertise. The IMSGuardian comes with an instructional DVD to aid in the installation. If you’re not comfortable with DIY, your independent Porsche shop will be happy to install it for you. It should take about 2 hours to install and is done during a scheduled oil change.

With the IMSGuardian you can relax and not worry constantly about a possible engine failure since you will have ample time if it ever detects metal to stop the engine and have it serviced before catastrophic failure happens.

I installed an IMSGuardian in my own car even though I had already upgraded the IMS bearing. The IMS bearing is not the only bearing in the M96/M97 engine that can fail and I’d like as much warning as possible if one were to fail.
